Dr. Dimmig has worked with the Himalayan Cataract Project in Ethiopia since 2012. The Himalayan Cataract Project funds education of ophthalmic surgeons in Asia and Africa via skills transfer outreach programs. Over the last 10 years they have focused on developing the eye care infrastructure in Ethiopia. Dr. Dimmig has now been on 3 separate surgical outreach trips to Ethiopia, the most recent in March of 2017 to Harar, Ethiopia. In Harar he along with 4 other ophthalmic surgeons (2 US, 2 Ethiopian) performed 1100 sight restoring cataract surgeries in 5 days.
Both Dr. Dimmig and Dr. Bonetto have each been on multiple surgical mission trips to the Hospital de la Familia in Guatemala on multiple occasions. Dr. Dimmig was involved from 2007 - 2011, and Dr. Bonetto continues to be involved, her last trip was in January of 2017. The Hospital de la Familia is run by a non-profit organization out of San Francisco. It is a self-sustaining operation with 60 full-time employees, including 5 doctors, 12 nurses, and a contingent of Guatemalan medical and dental students. The hospital treats about 10,000 patients yearly.
Volunteer U.S. surgical teams perform the bulk of the surgeries 4-6 times a year. In an average trip over 600 eye patients will be screened, many of which are provided glasses, and sight-restoring surgery on up to 120 patients.
